HPE OneSphere: A Multi – Cloud Platform With Kubernetes Under The Hood

Also available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Overcast, PlayerFM, Pocket Casts, Spotify, Stitcher, TuneIn

HPE OneSphere is a platform built for a time when Kubernetes has established itself as a stable enough technology that makes it capable of serving IT operations and developers in one SaaS deployment.

With Docker and Kubernetes under the hood, HPE OneSphere speaks to the new dimensions of IT and developer experiences that share the same environments, using container technologies for packaging and version control to allow for the use of multiple components across different infrastructure.

Portability is the essence of what makes a multicloud approach doable. Containers are inherently portable and can be managed on a SaaS platform such as with HPE OneSphere. Kubernetes makes it possible to run HPE OneSphere as a service that runs across cloud platforms and on-premise infrastructure.

We recently sat down with Bryan Jacquot, HPE director, distinguished technologist, and chief design architect, to tell us more about HPE OnesSphere and the concepts that it upholds. In particular, how we wanted to learn how it supports the beliefs that customers are digitally aware and businesses, as a result, have to be digitally driven in the architectures they establish for application development, deployment and management.

To hear Jacquot describe it, companies of all sizes across industries are becoming technology-driven businesses. They want to:

  • Engage with their customers in a digital way, which means creating competitive differentiation and advantage by digitizing the customer experience.
  • Leverage digital transformation to create new revenue streams and transform products, services, and operating models to more effectively compete.
  • Optimize operations — digitizing supply chains, and empowering employees with mobility and productivity apps.

And these digitally aware people use platforms that may be a cloud service, on-premises or some combination of different architectures. Their applications may be virtualized or on containers. HPE describes the market in a hybrid context and they stay by the language pretty clearly. No matter what the nature of the language though, microservices are here to stay and Kubernetes is serving as the underlying architecture with containers as a core unit of truth.

In This Edition:

1:37: Where HPE is in terms of thinking about IT and how it is being affected by the digital transformation
4:15: How does operating in multicloud environments affect people in IT?
7:42: What are some of the ways multicloud solutions have fallen short?
11:17: Application-oriented architectures and what HPE’s strategy is in providing that.
15:08: What it takes for IT operations to be able to provide a cloud to their end users.
16:27: Use cases for HPE OneSphere.
