With DevOps, it’s you are either all-in, or you will fail, asserted Darren Cunningham, vice president of portfolio marketing for application monitoring service New Relic.

The performance monitoring company is hosting FutureStack 2017 in New York City this Wednesday and Thursday.

For this year’s event, the company wanted to provide a venue for developers and Site Reliability Engineers to learn about new ways to learn what is driving digital change, Cunningham boasted. “It’s a great way to learn from cutting edge vendors who are already far along in the cloud and big data journey, to learn from them and each other no matter where they are in their own journey.”

Across the globe, more senior leadership is taking part as presenters, Cunningham said. There will also be a lot of sessions led by customers, including Google, Red Hat, and AWS, along with non-technical companies including REI, Dunkin’ Donuts and John Hancock. “We’ve seen a lot of benefits from customers learning from each other and trading best practices,” he said. There is a thirst for the “how” and practical sharing of experience.

The company is launching a certification program, and is hosting a partner day called the “Cloud Migration Summit” to encourage conversations around methodology.

Four Tracks to Run

There are four tracks for the main conference days on Wednesday and Thursday.

In the “Digital Moments of Truth,” track participants will discover how to handle traffic spikes. Customers will be explaining their outages, spikes, brownouts, degradations of performance, handling and preventing a crisis, and how they scaled up to cloud speed.

The “DevOps and Reliability at Scale” track will have partners sharing best practices around bring the methodology of bringing development and operations together.

The “Observability and Analytics” track (nicknamed “How do You Know What You Don’t Know”) looks at monitoring and filtering techniques.

The final track, “New Relic University,” is focused on how to take advantage of the New Relic product itself. It’s a deeper dive into use cases and how to use New Relic more effectively.

Right Culture

Things are changing so fast, you can’t get the most out of investments, you have to have the right culture in place.

As it’s grown, New Relic is seeing slower-moving industries who are now trying to move fast. And it’s found a lot of commonalities across industries.

“The two themes that emerge in every account,” Cunningham said, “are speed, or how do you go faster, and a number of deploys or how do you move at that speed without things breaking.”

Companies are no longer building an IT infrastructure for 3-5 years of sustainability, he said. With microservices and containers you’re spinning them up very quickly, so how do you keep up with this speed and how do you keep up with change will be one of the topics at the conference.

And not just from a tech perspective, but from a people perspective. What are the skills that we need? he asked. How does our culture need to transform?

“These are amazing times,” said Cunningham.
