StackPointCloud Now Offers Management Services For Istio Mesh

In September, StackPointCloud had launched an offering management services for Istio, a service mesh developed by Google, IBM and Lyft. On this episode of InApps Makers podcast, recorded at the Open Source Summit in Los Angeles, StackPointCloud founder and CEO Matt Baldwin spoke with TNS founder Alex Williams about the announcement.

Istio is comprised of multiple components, including the Istio proxy, Mixer, Pilot, Auth, and the Spiffe project, a verifying service identity used inside of Istio to handle Auth for service identity verification.

While Istio runs on the Kubernetes platform, Baldwin noted that this open source container orchestrator, now managed by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, is not the only thing for developers to consider. “Kubernetes is the platform and that platform is not the be-all-end-all platform. We believe you have to have a service mesh that sits on top of that. Even when users don’t know they’re going to need a service mesh when they start to scale, they need to start troubleshooting things like latency,” said Baldwin.
