Welcome to InApps Technology Context, a podcast where we discuss the latest news and perspectives in the world of cloud native computing. For this week’s episode, we spoke with Craig McLuckie, who is the VMware chief of Tanzu development, as well as one of the creators of Kubernetes. We asked him about the importance of the developer for modern business, the value that Kubernetes brings to developers and how VMware’s Tanzu portfolio enables that.

TNS editorial and marketing director Libby Clark hosted this episode, alongside TNS senior editor Richard MacManus, and TNS managing editor Joab Jackson.

Last week at the Cloud Foundry Summit, VMware released as beta the VMware Tanzu Application Service for Kubernetes, a package to bring a consistent development experience to Kubernetes through the use of the Cloud Foundry open source PaaS. We asked McLuckie for a definition of Tanzu, how TAS for K8s could help developers, how to use databases with Kubernetes, and why the developer is so important for today’s businesses.

“I think it’s dangerous to look at developers as being a single-faceted thing. There are lots and lots of different developers … It’s our job as an industry to make sure that it’s not a one-size-fits-all experience. It’s about really creating that right experience for the developer at the right time,” McLuckie said. “Agile teams need agile infrastructure. Kubernetes is a more naturally agile infrastructure expression. It provides the ability to deal with the mechanics of fitting an application to an environment. But it’s up to us to craft the right entry point, the right experience for developers based on where they are in their own journey.”
